The New River is a designated National Wild and Scenic River that runs its way through remote and beautiful mountain terrain of North Carolina. The state park on the river offers some great camping options for tent and trailer camping as well as primitive canoe-in sites. These canoe-in/walk-to campsites are located off of US Hwy 221 and include 14 sites for tent camping that are equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. Additional campground amenities include drinking water, restrooms, showers, and trash collection. Sites are $15 per night and can be reserved online up until the day before arrival.

This scenic coastal campground is located right near the water in Carolina Beach State Park and offers comfortable campsites with excellent access to some of the best fishing in the area. The campground includes a variety of campsites including electric and non-electric sites for tent and RV camping. The sites can accommodate RV equipment up to 90 feet in length. Sites are equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and grills. There are also some primitive group sites available as well. Additional campground amenities include restrooms, showers, coin laundry, marina store, boat launch and more. Sites range between $10-$28 per night depending on site and hookups included. There are also some rental cabins options available that are $55 per night. Reservations are available and can be made up until the day before arrival.

This remote and unique campground is located on Bear Island, an unspoiled island off the Atlantic Coast that offers pristine beaches and amazing scenery. The campground is accessible by ferry or private boat only and offers sites for tent camping right on the beach. The sites are accessed by foot or canoe/kayak. Amenities include picnic tables, drinking water, restrooms, and showers. Sites are $10 per night and can be reserved up until the day before arrival. Cataloochee Campground is located in a remote part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and offers a beautiful setting for camping near great hiking trails and fishing areas. The campground includes a total of 27 sites that can accommodate tents and trailers/small RVs up to 38 feet in length. The sites are equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and tent pads. Additional campground amenities include drinking water and flush toilets. All sites are $20 per night and can be reserved up until the time of arrival.

Stone Mountain State Park is known for the massive granite dome that provides dramatic scenery but the park also offers great hiking, fishing, climbing, and camping opportunities. The park campground includes 90 sites that can accommodate tents and RVs up to 90 feet in length. Some sites include electric and water hookups and all sites are equipped with picnic tables, fire pits/grills, and lantern posts. The campground amenities also include restrooms, drinking water, showers, and a dump station. Sites are $15 for non-electric sites and $20 for electric sites. Reservations can be made in advance but must be made at least a day ahead of arrival.

Tsali Recreation Area is known for its popular mountain biking trails but visitors will also enjoy other activities including hiking, horseback riding, paddling and fishing on Fontana Lake, and camping. The campground consists of 42 sites for tent and small RV camping. The sites have no hookups but do include picnic tables, lantern posts, and fire pits. Additional campground amenities also include restrooms, showers, and drinking water. Sites are all available first come, first serve for a nightly fee of $15 per site.

Long Point Cabin Camp is located within the scenic Cape Lookout National Seashore on the North Core Banks and is only accessible by private or commercial boat. The camp includes 10 cabin duplexes for a total of 20 cabins. The cabins vary in amenities but may include furniture, kitchenettes, private bathroom, A/C, electricity, and hot water. There are also central restrooms with showers available as well. Cabins vary in price between $84-$145 per night depending on amenities included and time of stay. Reservations are needed and can be made online.

These two group campgrounds are situated along Cove Creek in the Pisgah National Forest. The campground provides convenient campsite options for large groups visiting the Appalachian Mountains. The campsites are remote and require travel on a dirt road with multiple stream crossings. The sites can accommodate tents and RVs and up to 60 campers. Amenities include picnic tables, fire pits, grills, lantern posts, vault toilets, and drinking water. Sites can be reserved online up until 4 days before arrival. The nightly rate is $100 per campsite.

Turkey Creek Campground sits near the banks of its namesake creek and provides quiet and peaceful wooded sites close to Fontana Lake. The campground consists of a variety of sites that can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. Sites are equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, tent pads at most sites, and electric and water hookups. Additional amenities include restrooms, showers, drinking water, laundry, game room, and dump station. Sites can be reserved by phone or by request online. Nightly rates vary depending on the number of campers and electric hookups included but are available online.

Kerr Lake State Recreation Area includes 8 different access areas that are scattered along the wooded shoreline of the 50,000-acre lake. Most of those access areas include campgrounds. The JC Cooper Campground consists of over 100 sites including electric and non-electric sites. There are also some double sites available as well. All sites include picnic tables and fire pits/grills. Drinking water, restrooms, and a dump station are also available within the campground. The cost per night varies between $15-$40 depending on hookups included and site occupancy. Reservations are available and can be made online up until the day before arrival.
