This trail begins with a short bit of rolling terrain and then has a steep, sustained climb for a half of a mile. From here it’s nearly three miles of twisty downhill through dense woodlands. Eventually you’ll pass a water tank signaling you’re about to spit out onto Hurricane Mountain Road; from here you ride back up the road to your vehicle or drive back if you had the foresight to leave a shuttle car.

This trail starts near the summit of Hunt Mountain (which you may need a four-wheel drive to get to) and follows the more or less straight trajectory of the powerlines but with a whole lotta twists and turns; there are also plenty of little gaps and drops to keep it interesting. The trail runs out to Copper Mine Road where you find a short climb and then a long coast back to the long climb to your car. Bringing a second vehicle as a shuttle might be nice as well.

At a little after three miles and about seventeen hundred feet gained it all pays off with three miles of twisting downhill. After a little over a mile you’ll enjoy some downhill action and then a climb as the path doubles back toward the trailhead; there are many connectors and side trails in this area.

This long outing is best enjoyed on a hardtail mountain bike or cyclo-cross bike but is rated as though it’s a road ride. This trail offers mile after mile of rough country road (Dolly Copp Road) and repurposed rail grade taking you from the White Mountain Road all the way to the wetlands of Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. If supplies are needed on the journey look for Lowes Path at about trail mile 8.9, if you turn right on Lowes path it will take you to the highway and a country store a few hundred feet east and on the other side of the road. This trail may best be enjoyed as a one-way adventure with a shuttle vehicle parked at Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. Bring plenty of food and water and appropriate clothing for a long ride. The Dolly Copp Road is closed in winter months.
