This route allows you to explore and view many of the smaller islands of the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. Beginning at the Schooner Bay Marina, you will paddle around the east side of Oak Island and Bear Island, round its northern tip and head to York Island and Sand Island, and end at Little Sand Bay. Oak Island has beautiful rocky cliffs and forested shoreline with an impressive rock face on the north side of the island, Bear Island is similar but it contains many large, sandy beaches that make great lunch spots before venturing to York Island. Here, you will find a labyrinth of red sandstone sea caves and tunnels and large, wide open sandy beaches. On the east side of Sand Island, more outstanding rock formations and tunnels will add to the trip before reach Little Sand Bay. Many options for paths to explore these islands are available and there is too much to see and do all in one day. Be cautious of strong currents in the channels and adverse weather forecasts. Camping is available on Oak Island.

Chequamegon Waters Flowage is a 2366 acre lake located in Taylor County in the Chequamegon National Forest. It has a maximum depth of 22 feet and it is abundant with Panfish, Largemouth Bass, and Northern Pike. Visitors have access to the lake from five public boat landings. The shoreline is completely undeveloped except for a couple campgrounds. The surrounding forest is thick and beautiful and provides a feeling of solitude on the lake. Some very pretty marshes surround the lake as well. There is lots of wildlife and a great variety of vegetation to observe.

Chicog Lake is a 125 acre lake located in Washburn County. It has a maximum depth of 25 feet and has great fishing for Panfish, Largemouth Bass, and Northern Pike. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing off of Chicog Lake Road. The lake's water is moderately clear and the shorelines are filled with an absolutely beautiful forest. This is a very quiet and peaceful lake.

Lake Chippewa is a 14,593 acre lake located in Sawyer County in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. It has a maximum depth of 92 feet and hosts an abundant population of a wide variety of fish. Visitors have access to the lake from several public boat landings. The lake is very large and contains a lot of coves in the shorelines and many forested islands. The surrounding forest is very thick and beautiful and provides a deep wilderness feeling and great wildlife viewing opportunities. There are many quiet, peaceful places that offer solitude. There are endless opportunities for exploring.

Oakwood Lakes State Park has eight combined glacial lakes and offers almost every kind of land and water activity for the whole family. The park used to be a summer camp gathering place for American Indians, but was later developed after 1869. A variety of trails and shaded trees cover much of the shoreline, and there are a lot of waterfowl, turtles and other wildlife sightings near Scout Island. A $6 day use fee is required for each vehicle, and there are canoe and kayak rentals available.

Bear Lake is a large lake located in Washburn County. It has a maximum depth of 87 feet and a good population of Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Walleye. Visitors have access to the lake from several public boat landings. The lake is very scenic and its shoreline consists of beautiful forest, open fields, and the Bear Lake Sedge Meadow State Natural Area. There are several streams around the shore that are great for exploring. There is great wildlife viewing opportunities.

Turtle Flambeau Flowage is a 12,942 acre lake located in Iron County. It has a maximum depth of 50 feet and it hosts large populations of a wide variety of fish. Visitors have access to the lake from five public boat landings. It is filled with countless islands and coves. The shoreline is long and contains large portions that are undeveloped. The scenery and views are untainted and gorgeous and there are numerous places to explore and find solitude. There are many beautiful areas around the shores for family games or picnics.

Big Bay Lagoon is a 130 acre lake located in Ashland County on Madeline Island. It is partly in Big Bay State Park and partly in the Big Bay Town Park. It has a maximum depth of only 10 feet and fish include Panfish and Northern PIke. Visitors have access to the lake from Big Bay Town Park. A small channel connects the lagoon to Big Bay of Lake Superior. This is an absolutely gorgeous place to paddle. It is very quiet and is surrounded by marshland plants, forest, and the vast Lake Superior.

Lake Pepin is a 24,550 acre lake located in Pierce County in the Rush River Delta State Natural Area. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass, and Northern Pike. Visitors have access to the lake from several public boat landings. The lake is a flowage on the Mississippi River and creates the Wisconsin Border. The scenery and views are stunning. There are numerous forested islands, thick forest fills the shorelines, public beaches, lake resorts, several small cities, and many other diversities that beautify the scenery.

Little Falls Lake is a 170 acre lake located in Saint Croix County in the Willow River State Park. It has a maximum depth of 18 feet and it is abundant with Largemouth Bass and Panfish. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing and a public beach. The scenery is stunning. The entire lake is within the state park and there are many beautiful views. The shoreline is filled with a thick forest that displays gorgeous foliage. The lake is quiet and peaceful.
