You will hike some of the highest points of the Jackson-Washington State Forest. The knobs (round hills) are high and close to each other. The trails are very well marked and maintained. Make sure to hike to the Pinnacle Peak. Pit toilets and drinking water are available at the lake campground.

Located in the smallest of the designated wilderness areas in Illinois, this scenic area offers miles of trails that explore the area which includes a canyon of high cliffs and sandstone bluffs. The area is very remote and offers excellent scenery and wildlife viewing opportunity. There are multiple trails in the area, many of which are not marked, so pay close attention to be sure you are staying on the right trails. The area is very popular with hikers, backpackers, and birdwatchers, but biking and use of other mechanized vehicles is not allowed in the wilderness area.

Leading along the western shores of Cedar Lake, this trail provides excellent scenery and good views of the lake as it leads through forest terrain that is home to abundant wildlife. The trail is all natural surface and is popular for hiking and horseback riding. There are some steep sections along the trail that can be physically strenuous and slippery. There are multiple trailheads and parking areas that can be used to access the trail.

This trail is located south of Cedar Lake and leads through dense and lush woodlands along the shores of a small cove of the lake. The trail passes over a spillway that is scenic but can be slippery so be cautious. There is lots of interesting wildlife and plantlife along the route that also includes poisonous snakes and poisonous plants so wear pants and watch where you walk. The road to the trailhead can be rough and is only passable by high-clearance vehicles so walking the rough dirt road to the trailhead may by required.

This is a long path. You will see sinkholes, caves, ravines forest and river bluffs. Water is scarce, pack plenty with you. There are a few shelter spots along the way, they are far apart and have pit toilets. Backpackers are allowed to camp along the trail. A campground is available. The Park entry fee is higher for out of state vehicles.

This part of the Knobstone trail is open for hunting during hunting season. Keep in mind there is no drinking water or restrooms at the trailheads. What you carry in, has to be carried out. No fee.

A curious fact about this park, it has a working haypress barn, it uses oxen for power and a pioneer farmstead. This hike is a backpacking one. It is beyond the park limits, into the Harrison-Crawford State Forest. Park entry fee required.

Paved all the way through, cyclists, hikers and joggers share the trail year-round. Not many shady spots, which can make it hot during the summer months. The views are amazing and this is an easy ride. With parking at both ends, the rider can decide if they want to make this a one-way or an out and back ride. This mapping is done as an out and back ride.

This is the only trail that is for hikers only. It is very well marked; it crosses paths with other trails. In hunting season, please wear bright orange and stay away from white clothing. You will go over steep ridges, a grove with huge yellow pine, a hardwood forest and by a wilderness pond. In the spring is a good time to see the ferns. At the end of your hike, remember to climb the fire tower. It offers great views of the park. Park entry fee required.
