The Spokane River Centennial Trail was built in 1989 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Washington's statehood. The trail is nearly level and paved for its entire length. This segment hugs the scenic shore of the Spokane River to the Gateway Regional Park at the border between Washington and Idaho, where it connects to the Northern Idaho Centennial Trail. There are several access points with parking in this segment. The trail is great not only for recreation, but for getting around the Spokane Valley, as it passes near several destinations including the Spokane Valley Mall and Liberty Lake.
