There are quite a few different ways to reach the mainline trail. The hike starts in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness and makes for a great climb for those doing multiple day hikes in the area. This is a ridgeline trail that starts at the mouth of Maud Creek in the Bitterroot Range. Reconstruction was done in 1997, with some long sweeping switchbacks that make for a moderate climb. A wilderness permit can be obtained from a Forest Service facility or a registration box.
