Bates Pond forms where Bridge Creek connects with the John Day River. A bit further down the river, Clear Creek also joins the river. This overlook loop trail follows the ridge along the northeast side of the lake that has views of Bates State Park, Vinegar Hill, Dixie Butte and the surrounding valley including Bates Pond. The trail then leads down to run along the pond and return to the trailhead. While meandering along the pond, look for beavers and their hard work.
