The area around Magnetic Rock Trial was subject to a massive blowdown in 1999, a prescribed burn in 2002 and a large forest fire in 2006, and the terrain still shows the scars of the devastating disasters. Before these events the terrain was mostly thick forest, but now it is somewhat of a barren landscape struggling to rebound. Most of the trail is on rock or thin soil, and vegetation is very slim. The rock you walk on is literally magnetic and will alter your compass if you are close enough to the ground.
