The hike to Carlton Peak is one of the more dramatic high points on the north shores of Lake Superior. Carlton Peak was named after an early 20th century copper miner, Reuben B. Carlton, who gave the land to the State of Minnesota via The Nature Conservancy. The trail this adventure utilizes climbs around 360 feet, whereas the trail from Highway 61 climbs almost 900 vertical feet. Many tout the views atop Cartlon Peak as the best of the North Shore, and even the best in Minnesota.
