General William Smallwood served as Maryland’s governor from 1785 to 1788, then retired to his plantation, which is now a state park bearing his name. The tour starts at this restored plantation home and travels through rolling farmland and woods to the Old Durham Church, makes a stop at the fishing dock on Nanjemoy Creek, and then traverses swampland and farms to loop back to the park. This route consists of paved roads with light traffic over rolling terrain with beautiful scenery of the sweeping landscape.
