Starting from the Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve, the Great Western Trail travels through diverse landscape and terrain as it follows an old railroad bed to its end at the town of Sycamore. The trail passes through woodlands, wetlands, prairies, farmlands and small rural communities that all offer great scenery. The trail is a wide crushed limestone that is has only minimal elevation change making it a good choice for riders of all skill levels. The trail is multi-use but is most popular for bicycling due to its long distance. The ride can be done as a long out-and-back or a one-way ride by shuttling vehicles between trailheads.
