The trailhead is located one mile off Highway 6, past the Laird Park entrance, and at the mouth of Sypah Creek. Sand Mountain is one of the longer hikes in the Palouse Ranger District, and the route passes through old logging activities, old-growth stands, wildflowers, and different habitats. The trail is well maintained, making for a moderate hike that reaches Sand Mountain Lookout & Peak, Micah Mountain, and then ends near Moose Creek at NF Road 381. A wilderness permit can be obtained from a Forest Service facility or a registration box.
