Mountaineering

This outing leads through lodgepole pines, meadows, and encounters with the swift Iron creek. Mount Regan is one of the most photographed peaks in the Sawtooth Range and sits at the south end of Sawtooth Lake. The summit can be approached by 4 different routes including; Southeast Ridge, Lower East Face, North Ridge, and Northwest Ridge. The Southeast Ridge is the most popular approach as it goes from the south end of Sawtooth Lake across a broad saddle down to a smaller lake, and then contours around the base of the southeast ridge to a large gully. From there the route goes up a tree covered slope to the top of the ridge with class 4 climbing, and then follows the ridge to the base of the summit dome. The Northwest Ridge starts west of Sawtooth Lake or East of Trail Lakes, and then follows a rugged ridge toward the summit with several rappels and class 5 climbing. This route is the North Ridge approach, which goes from the south end of Sawtooth Lake, then goes up steep slabs to the ridge just below the summit. From the prominent notch that separates the ridge from the mountain, you’ll rappel down to a narrow area and anchor to the opposite wall. From there, you’ll climb up the notch wall to the upper ridge and follow it to the summit. The summit sits on intense high grade metamorphic rock with gneiss on the high Idaho batholith.
