The hike starts just west of Big Sand Lake, in the Bitterroot Range. The route is uneven and wet, making it somewhat challenging as it traces through the dense forest. The scenery in the area is ranked very high as the trail traces through the Selway-Biterroot Wilderness. It ends at Little Dead Elk Pass near the boundary of the Nez Perce National Forest.
