Located on a barrier island that divides the mouth of the Apalachicola River from the Gulf of Mexico, St. George Island State Park offers multiple trails that lead through tall slash pines and coastal scrub forest on the easternmost tip of the island. The Gap Point trail starts from the campground and travels southwest through desert-like landscape to the sandy shoreline of Apalachicola Bay. The trail is remote and rugged, and can be brutal when hot, so be prepared for the elements when setting out.
