Burns Gulch crosses the Animas River and offers spectacular views of the giant peaks surrounding you. You will ride the San Juan Country Road to access the trail. Once you reach the turn off you will climb out of the valley along a narrow slope. The road is mostly dirt and loose rocks and is very narrow in some places. You will pass by several old mines and reach above treeline into the back side of American Basin to a cirque. Stock SUV with High Clearance and 4 Low should be good.
