Animas River is a free-flowing river that offers expert only terrain in the upper Animas Gorge. Once it leaves the canyon walls it flows into a wide valley and is mostly flatwater. This upper section is the first part of the river that is doable for beginners. This is a good family float as it passes through open ranchlands and cottonwoods that line the banks.
