Animas River is a free-flowing river that offers expert only terrain in the upper Animas Gorge. Once it leaves the canyon walls it flows into a wide valley and is mostly flatwater. This section flows through the mdidle of town and offers a fun float with good playing whitewater. There are several good rapids with Big Smelter being the hardest rated a class III.
