Animas River is a free-flowing river that offers expert only terrain in the upper Animas Gorge. Once it leaves the canyon walls it flows into a wide valley and is mostly flatwater. This section is a pleasant float that wanders through ranchlands with sandstone cliffs in the distance. When levels are low, floating can be long and slow. The historic Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad parallels parts of this section.
