This is a loop trail that connects Pine Trail, Sand Hills Trail, Ridge Trail, River Trail, and Eagle Creek Trail. The trails are both single track and dirt roads. The trail begins along Pine Trail through ponderosa pines which eventually changes to chaparral. At about half a mile the trail passes an observation deck with views of the Monterey and Santa Cruz coastline, Santa Cruz mountains, and the redwood forest that makes up Henry Cowell State Park. It descends along Sand Hills Trail towards Ridge Trail and the San Lorenzo River. River Trail meanders through a lush redwood forest as it follows the river to a redwood grove. From here, the trail ascends out of the grove where it is surrounded by manzanita and madrone before returning to the trailhead. This area of Henry Cowell State Park has giant first growth redwoods that have been protected by Henry Cowell and Joseph Welch since the 1860's. Dogs are permitted in the park, however, there is a $2 dog fee. There is also a $3 parking fee.
