Webster Lake is in the town of Webster, located near the Connecticut border and has a surface area of 1,442 acres. The lake’s shore is extensively developed with both summer homes and permanent homes packed tightly around the water’s edge. The lake has a very unique shape with numerous peninsulas jutting into the middle of the lake, several islands and two swampy coves. There are three basins on Webster Lake, but public access is only available to the north basin at Memorial Beach and at the south basin at a state beach on Lakeside Avenue. Although the lake is most commonly known as Webster Lake, the original name and the name that many residents of the area believe is the correct name, is Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. This 45-letter name is cited as the longest place name in the United States and comes from Nipmuc, an Algonquian language that means, “Fishing Place at the Boundaries, Neutral Meeting Grounds.”
