This is a challenging ride that traverses the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. It starts with a grueling climb from Hilo and rewards finishers with an exhilarating downhill stretch into Waimea. The first point of interest is Rainbow Falls. Signs on Waianueue Avenue in Hilo will lead you on the short detour. The falls are spectacular and well worth the time. Also along the route, is Kaumana Caves County Park. Here you'll find stairs leading to an underground lava tube. You can break the ride into two days by staying at cabins in Mauna Kea state recreation area, a little more than halfway through the route. Past Mauna Kea, begins the long descent into Waimea. Bring enough food and water for the entire ride. There are no services available along the road.
