Road Biking

This is a difficult ride and not one to take lightly or to attempt without planning. There are very few services available on the route, so be prepared to carry a large amount of food and water. bring plenty of layers and be prepared for any kind of weather conditions including scorching sunshine, fog, rain, snow, blizzard conditions or all of the above. Also, be prepared for elevation affects. The air gets pretty thin near the top and most people will find it more and more difficult to exert themselves as they climb above about 10,000 feet. Call the visitors information station at 808-961-2180 before starting the ride to check summit weather conditions and to get information about possible road closures.A mountain bike or cross bike with knobby tires will be essential for climbing above the visitor's center. At the summit, you'll be treated to 360 degree views. If you do make it to the summit, be careful on the downhill section over the loose gravel as it is easy to lose traction and slip out, especially on the hairpin corners. It is not recommended to attempt this ride with out a support vehicle. Be aware your support vehicle can't go past the visitor's center without 4 wheel drive. Many people opt to forgo the bike down and instead ride down with the support vehicle.
