Mount Shasta is a 14,126 foot stratovolcano and the second largest peak within the Cascade Range. This route climbs up Cascade Gulch along the southwest facing slope between Mount Shasta and its sister peak Shastina. In addition to descending from the summit of Mount Shasta, this route gives you the option of climbing to Shastina instead. For the route described here, an ice axe, crampons, and a climbing rope are required for the upper crevasses at Whitney Glacier beyond Shastina and below the summit of Mount Shasta. This trip can be done in a day, but is best enjoyed as a multi-day trip. For mountaineers, descend via ascent route. Difficulty Rating: IV S4 A
